I do not claim to be an expert of the Dakota, Lakota, Nakoda nor Nakota languages. But I am a student of those languages with the sincere desire of seeing that these Languages of the First Nation are preserved. With what small talents that I may possess I wish to help with the preservation and teaching of these First Nation Languages.
The Oceti Sakowin language has not been in written form until recently but was mainly a spoken language,
I do apologize for any misprinting, misspelling or mispronunciations of the words on these pages.

For those wishing to learn the Ihanktowan Dialect of the Dakota Language, The Elders have estabished the following web page. Furthermore, on these three (3) web pages are the Dakota, Lakota and Nakota Language/Dialect Study Courses. In addition, here are some Canadian Web Pages that cover the Souian Languages. They include the Çree (Plains), Çree (Swampy), Çree (Woodland), Dene, Ihanktonwan (Dakota), Isaåti (Dakota), Nakoda (Hohenakota), Nakota (Assiniboine) and Nakawe (Saulteaux) Dialects

To read the entries in this Electronic Dictionary you will need the "Dakota TTF font". Below you will see two entries for the Dakota word for "Mule". If the smaller entry does not match the larger entry for the Dakota word for "Mule", then please download and install the "Dakota TTF font" on your computer.
To accomplish this, start by creating a new folder on your hard drive called "Temp"
Download the "Dakota TTF font" zipped file folder. Save this zip file in the New Folder "Temp"
Extract the "font" from the Zip Folder {PC = Dakota_.TTF} {Mac = Dakota_.AFM}
